I personally don't like things like this, I feel it tends to make little groups of people in a forum, people starting to say "I'm better than you because I have a gold badge while you only have bronze".. In my opinion a forum should consist of members that are all equals, not one better than another because they have stars or have been around longer, or have a higher post count.. I've been a member on forums where this sort of thing, and others have caused a few divisions and such, mainly because some folk have less online time than others, so don't earn such awards or higher ranks in the community and it's been the cause of a few problems, some of the less frequent posters ended up leaving because of the elitism of rankings, they felt left out and ignored by the people who had time etc to earn the ranks/stars, whatever.. Sure, some award/reward system is good, but not if it creates groups in a forum.. In my opinion we're all equal, getting things like this tends to sometimes make for an unequal playing field, I think it's one reason I'm thinking very seriously of doing away with the Junior and Senior member groups in my forum and just having the member group, this way there's no saying I'm a senior, you're a junior, so I'm better than you" kind of thing, at least then the only thing that can happen is folk bragging about post counts and saying "I have 10,000 posts more than you do,".. Everyone's more equal without special awards or rankings, so less problems for staff to have to handle, or potentially have to handle further down the line.. |

Believe me Sandy, equality means a lot to me. It's why we only have two staff member groups instead of individual jobs for each staff member's job (moderator, staff management etc). It's also why we don't have staff colours (although staff will have colours in the 3.1 update to stand out as staff as like a uniform of authority). VIPs don't exactly scream equality but there certainly needs to be some sort of system in place as a reward for being a loyal member. We don't encourage members to think they're better and will get involved to warn off members who have this attitude. Equality is something me & Patrick (Pacho) is something we are very encouraging about since our days being apart of a GTA community and seeing members mistreated by staff members thinking they're better than them and VIPs being given special treatment. We're a community and we aim to remain that way but we'd also like to give some perks to our loyal and respectful members
